In 1982 the Finnish government carried out a series of trials to select a replacement APC for their ageing BTR-60P. The design selected was the Sisu XA-180, ordered at the end of 1983 and entering production soon after. It is nicknamed as Pasi, Finnish name for armored Sisu. At first all production of the XA-180 was for the Finnish armed forces, but since the type proved ideal for operations with United Nations forces, the XA-180s have also been produced for Norwegian, Austrian, Irish and Swedish troops operating in conflict areas. More than 1 200 APCs of all variants were produced.
The XA-180 is based on the Sisu SA-150 military truck and uses many identical automotive components, although the XA-180`s chassis and 6x6 wheelbase arrangement is very different. The layout of the XA-180 is somewhat unusual with the engine located just behind the driver on the left-hand side with the troop compartment at the rear. This APC offers more internal space than similar vehicles. It provides accommodation for up to 10 fully equipped troops. Soldiers enter and leave via two doors in the hull rear or roof hatches.
Armor of this vehicle is 6 to 12 mm thick. Hull bottom has improved mine protection. The front windows are bullet-resistant. These are covered with protective hatches in combat conditions.
Early XA-180s were unarmed but this was later rectified when a 12.7-mm MG on a ring type mounting was added. The XA-180s intended for United Nations support missions (as many are) may have a twins 12.7-mm MG mounting while others have small turrets. Vehicle has a number of firing ports, so occupants can also fire their weapons.
The Sisu XA-180 is powered by a Valmet 611 diesel engine, developing 236 hp. Vehicle has continuous all-wheel drive and good cross country capabilities. This APC is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by two waterjets. It can be airlifted by the C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft.
Since its introduction the XA-180 APC has been continuously developed. It is available in a number of specialized variants. The Finnish Army operates a small number of XA-180s fitted with folding hydraulic masts which lift air defense radar scanners above the tree line to provide an all-round search pattern.
XA-181 has been converted to carry the Crotale NG air defense missile system. The Finnish Army has about 20 of these;
XA-185 improved version, fitted with uprated engine (246 hp), a revised roof hatch layout, and new axles which impart a slightly higher silhouette. It was produced in large numbers;
XA-186 is operated by Norwegian United Nations troops, carrying a twin 12.7-mm MG turret;
XA-188 early variant of the XA-200 series with improved protection. It is in service with the Dutch army, marines and Estonian army;
XA-200 series is the latest production version with improved armor protection. It looks little different from older models. The XA-203 armored personnel carrier is in service with Finland, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
