The Pinzgauer II is a further development of the Pinzgauer light utility vehicle. It was developed by BAE Systems. It has increased mobility, payload, performance and protection. It is available only in 6x6 configuration. Currently production rights of this military vehicle belong to BAE Systems and the Pinzgauer is produced in the United Kingdom.
The new vehicle is larger and has more internal volume. The Pinzgauer II has increased payload over its predecessor. This versatile military vehicle can carry 3.8 t of cargo or, two standard NATO pallets, or 14 fully equipped troops. This vehicle can be also fitted with a shelter body or used as a specialist equipment carrier. The Pinzgauer II can tow trailers or light artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 2 t.
The Pinzgauer II can be fitted with add-on modular armor. It provides protection against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and IED blasts. With armor applied vehicle can be used as protected troop carrier.
Vehicle is powered by a Steyr 3.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 194 hp. This engine meets EURO 4 emission requirements. Engine is coupled with an automatic 6-speed transmission. This military vehicle has exceptional cross country performance. The Pinzgauer II has a maximum road range of about 1 000 km. It can be increased to 2 000 km by adding another fuel tank, which is proposed as an option. Such a long range on fuel provides operational and logistics support benefits. With preparation this light vehicle fords water obstacles up to 1.5 m deep.
A high-bodied ambulance and communication shelters versions of the Pinzgauer II are available. These can be carried by the C-130 Hercules tactical cargo aircraft. A weapon carrier version can be carried inside the CH-47 Chinook medium transport helicopter. Other versions of the Pinzgauer II can be carried by helicopters underslung.
Pinzgauer Mantis has a bonneted cab design. It is slightly lower and narrower than the baseline Pinzgauer II. Some sources claim, that the bonneted cab design was selected in order to improve mine resistance, as the driver is seated behind the front wheels, giving him a chance of survival in case the vehicle runs over a mine. The rear cargo area is smaller due to the bonneted cab design of the vehicle. The Mantis has a lower roofline and can be carried inside the CH-47 Chinook and UH-53 helicopters. In terms of capabilities and performance the Mantis is similar to the Pinzgauer II. It can be also fitted with add-on armor kit. The Mantis has been tested as a prime mover for the M777 towed howitzer.
